Details About Our Mattapan Martial Arts Program

The Boston School of Boabom teaches Seamm-Jasani, Yaanbao and Boabom, three no-contact forms of martial arts that include aspects of breathing, mindfulness, meditation and self defense. These ancient Tibetan practices help our students to diffuse anxiety and stress while feeling much more focused in their everyday life. Our Mattapan area classes are offered in one-on-one and group settings for children and adults, and are guided by our gentle, caring trainers.

While classified as one of the martial arts, Boabom and its subcategories are non-competitive and don’t involve contact, so they show enthusiasts ways to employ self defense tactics without showing any aggression to fellow participants. Boabom students advance by mastering different motions weekly which build upon the prior lessons. Our martial arts training course helps strengthen your breathing, agility, self-control, reflexes, speed and balance give you greater peace of mind and build your self-confidence as you face the challenges of life. Why not make the most of our introductory and free adult martial arts classes every Saturday and Wednesday?

Meditation Classes At Our Mattapan Area School

Meditation is an ancient Indian practice that has more purpose than ever in our stressful modern day world. Combining breath control and mindfulness techniques, meditation is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress and anxiety. A great number of studies have established that meditation techniques can improve sleep and reduce high blood pressure and depressive disorders. Children together with adults can benefit from applying regular meditation.

Learn to meditate at the Boston School of Boabom. Our seated and still meditations in Mattapan mix breathing, visualization, imagination and sound to help in slowing down racing thoughts and our sometimes critical inner voice. Our excellent instructors walk you through each phase of a guided mindfulness meditation, including gradually easing you out of it afterwards. Our trainees report feeling more centered, refreshed, and ready to face the rest of the day after a meditation lesson. The Boabom approach to meditation is known as “the recycling of the mind” and involves stretching poses to help loosen the body and break up muscular tension.

Online Martial Arts Classes

Online martial arts classes are a great way to combat stress and get physical exercise throughout the coronavirus pandemic, or when your lifestyle requires the ability to take lessons in your own home. Web based martial arts sessions also help you feel a connection with other people with the same interest, in spite of the fact that you aren’t standing beside them physically. If you do not have direct access to a martial arts school that teaches a discipline on the web, YouTube is an awesome resource for discovering free training. You can also speak to a local martial arts school to determine if they might be streaming classes or providing other internet programs.

Breathing & Meditation Classes Online

To make our meditation classes more convenient for the general public and to help continue providing our services during the coronavirus crisis, the Boston School of Boabom has begun providing online meditation and breathing lessons. Classes are conducted online through Zoom at 11.00am on Saturday mornings. The hour-long online guided meditation is taught by our director Yemado. You can anticipate the exact same breathing and stretching exercises as you do in our normal in-person meditation classes. This is the perfect solution to help reduce any anxiety and stress you may be dealing with throughout these worrying days. Participants are able to join online. Donations are optional, but not required to attend.

What’s the Difference Between Tai Chi and Boabom?

Because Boabom is often learned as an alternative to Tai Chi, some people wonder what is the difference? Both disciplines use deep breathing and bodily movements to reduce stress, build strength, and help people to feel more connected to themselves.

One main distinction is that Boabom is still considered a sort of martial art although it is a non-competitive medium, while Tai Chi is principally a sort of physical exercise, albeit one that depends on quieting the mind and using breathing and relaxation techniques. Boabom’s roots are in ancient Tibet while Tai Chi originated in China.

Boabom sometimes also features the use of implements such as short staffs for executing some of the moves, and giving the discipline more of a self-defense type feel. Boabom has also got subclasses which are known as Seamm-Jasani (also called gentle Boabom) and osseous Boabom (traditional Boabom), while there is only one form of Tai Chi.

Boabom Classes vs Yoga Classes – Do They Compare?

Both yoga and Boabom are great at developing agility and balance in addition to reducing anxiety and stress, but can you actually compare them? The primary difference is that yoga is not a martial arts technique like Boabom certainly is. Boabom can be learned in courses as a non-competitive, no-contact form of martial arts, however several of the movements are still classified as self defense. Boabom also uses short staffs and other implements which amplify its roots in the martial arts of the past.

Yoga is not a kind of self defense, although it does require comparable breathing exercises and performing a variety of movements to limber up the muscles and release stress. There are also many varieties of yoga that vary from gentle to more intense exercises and stretches, as well as the ever popular hot yoga. Whether Boabom or yoga is better for you depends upon your own personal preferences.

Martial Arts Classes for Companies

Martial arts classes are a powerful team building strategy for your workforce that can also help them combat stress, promote mindfulness and feel more efficient in the workplace. Your work team can attend a martial arts class in person, or participate in one via Zoom online. We also offer the possibility for you to have a martial arts teacher visit your workplace and conduct a class as an alternative to taking a kickboxing, yoga or tai chi class.

You will find there are plenty of categories of martial arts to consider for your staff. Some demand a lot more contact, such as karate and jiu jitsu, whilst Boabom is a no-contact, non-competitive kind of martial arts. Your personnel might also want to consider a yoga or tai chi session as yet another way to relieve the stresses or work.

Meditation Classes for Businesses

Increase productivity and help your personnel handle stress by letting them get involved in business meditation classes. They can join a meditation class in person at the studio or via Zoom, or you can have a meditation instructor visit your place of business. Learning meditation techniques can have beneficial effects on an employee’s home life, together with time spent on the job.

Boston School of Boabom Reviews

“I really liked taking classes here. The art is great exercise and I like practicing it. I haven’t been back in a while because I can’t afford it, but I still practice some moves at home. One of my concerns is that there isn’t always enough stretching, although I understand there are limitations due to the length of classes. I feel like this is more important for people that don’t do yoga, or other stretches outside of the art.

This is the only location in the US. I really believe them that it is an ancient art, because if you’ve seen students spar in the highest levels, you can easily see how different it is from other martial art forms. One of the things that distinguishes Boabom, is they practice non-contact fighting because you will be taught how to hurt people if you ever need to. It is better this way for the health of people involved, but also because you really know what to do if you ever need to. In a lot of other schools, people get hurt learning to fight, but that doesn’t happen in Boabom.

I liked having the chance to have deep conversations with people before and after classes. I feel that most students are friendly and more spiritually advanced than the average person. I’d like to start going again some day. I learned a lot of valuable life skills from being a part of Boston Boabom.” Andrew

“I saw an ad for Boabom (“Bo-ah-bomb”) a few years ago on the T, and I was curious. The ad made it look like yoga, but the website promised something more like martial arts. I went to the free Saturday intro class, and decided to give it a shot.

The instructors of Boabom will tell you that it is “meditation through movement”. To the rest of us, it’s a great form of exercise that will improve your flexibility, balance, coordination, breathing and leave your head clear at the end of class. You can follow the core “Boabom” classes, which focus on strength and speed, or try Seamm Jasani (pronounced See-ahhm Ha-sah-nee), which is much slower. I’ve seen people practice from age 8 into their 70’s.

Boabom isn’t taught like most forms of self defense, in that you don’t spar. You will practice carefully with each other, but there is no hitting, leaving you bruised or hurt. If you’re looking to learn how to fight someone, this isn’t for you. But over time you WILL learn how to defend yourself effectively, getting into shape as you do so.

In every class, you learn something new. Every class. There are so many different movements, that you progressively add new ones, and leave others behind as you have mastered them. This keeps classes interesting, instead of having the same session week after week.

I practiced Boabom for three years before moving to Somerville. As much as I love it, the trek to Brookline is too long to keep up regularly. I would still be there if I lived closer, though.

If you’re looking for a good workout, for something that’s different, I’d give Boabom a try!” Alex
