About Our Arlington Martial Arts Program

We at the Boston School of Boabom teach Boabom, Seamm-Jasani and Yaanbao, three types of no-contact martial arts which incorporate elements of breathing, self defense, mindfulness and meditation. These ancient Tibetan practices help our trainees diffuse anxiety and stress whilst feeling more focused in their day to day life. Our Arlington area classes are available in group and one-to-one environments for adults and children, led by our supportive, gentle trainers.

Although it is generally regarded as one of the martial arts, Boabom and its subdivisions use no contact and are not competitive, therefore they show students ways to employ defense tactics without showing any aggressiveness to other trainees. Boabom students advance by learning different movements weekly which build on the previous lessons. This martial arts package helps improve your speed, breathing, balance, reflexes, self-control and agility to develop your self confidence and gain peace of mind as you face life’s challenges. You can make the most of our introductory and free adult Boabom classes every Saturday and Wednesday.

    Arlington Meditation Classes

Meditation is an ancient Indian practice that has purpose more than ever in our stress filled modern day world. Integrating mindfulness and breath control techniques, meditation is one of the best ways to reduce anxiety and stress. A large number of research studies have demonstrated that meditation can reduce high blood pressure, fend off depression and improve sleep. Kids together with adults may be helped by applying meditation.

Learn to practice meditation at the Boston School of Boabom. Our still and seated meditations in Arlington integrate imagination, sound, visualization and breathing to help in slowing down our often critical inner voice and our racing thoughts. Our instructors walk you through every stage of a guided mindfulness meditation, including gradually drawing you out of it afterwards. Our many meditation trainees report feelings of being refreshed, more centered, and better able to take on the rest of the day following a meditation session. The Boabom approach to meditation is referred to as “the recycling of the mind” and involves stretching moves to help in loosening up the body and break up tension in the muscles.

    Martial Arts Classes Online

Taking martial arts classes online is a great means by which to eliminate stress and get a bit of exercise during the coronavirus pandemic, or when your way of life demands the convenience of taking lessons in your own home. Web based martial arts lessons also help you feel a connection with other people having the same interests, despite the fact that you’re not literally standing beside them. If you have not got direct access to a martial arts school that teaches one of the disciplines on the internet, YouTube is an awesome resource to locate free lessons. You could also check with a local martial arts school to find out if they might be streaming classes or offering internet programs.

    Online Breathing and Meditation Classes

To help continue providing our services throughout the coronavirus epidemic and to make our meditation sessions more convenient for the public, the Boston School of Boabom has begun offering online breathing and meditation sessions. Sessions are carried out online by using Zoom on Saturday mornings at 11 AM. The online guided meditation last for one hour and is taught by Yemado, our director. You can anticipate the same stretching and breathing exercises as you do in our standard on-site meditation sessions. You’ll discover that this is a fantastic approach to help reduce any stress and anxiety that you may be suffering from during these worrying times. Participants are able to register online. Donations are optional, but not necessary to take part.

What is the Difference Between Tai Chi and Boabom?

Since Boabom is frequently learned as an alternative to Tai Chi, some folks wonder what is the difference? Both disciplines use physical movements and breathing techniques to relieve tension, build strength, and help practitioners to feel more connected to themselves.

The key distinction is that Boabom is still regarded as a form of martial arts even though it is non-competitive, whilst Tai Chi is mainly a type of exercise, albeit one that relies on quieting the mind and employing breathing techniques. Boabom’s roots are in ancient Tibet while Tai Chi began in China.

Boabom sometimes also incorporates the use of accessories like short staffs for carrying out a few of the moves, and therefore giving the practice a bit more of a self-defense type feel. Boabom has also got some subcategories which are known as osseous Boabom (traditional Boabom) and Seamm-Jasani (also called gentle Boabom), while there is just one type of Tai Chi.

Yoga Classes vs Boabom Classes – What is the Comparison?

Both Boabom and yoga are great at developing agility and balance along with lowering stress and anxiety, but how do they really compare? The real difference is that yoga is not a martial arts technique while Boabom certainly is. Boabom can be taught in sessions as a no-contact, non-competitive martial art, but several of the actions can still be classified as self defense. Boabom can also use accessories such as short staffs that harp back to its roots in ancient martial arts.

Yoga does not come under the umbrella term of self defense, but it does call for similar breathing exercises and executing a number of moves to release stress and loosen the muscles. Yoga also comes in many styles which vary from basic to more strenuous stretches and workouts, and the ever popular hot yoga. Your own personal preferences will determine if yoga or Boabom is right for you.

    Team Building Martial Arts Classes

Martial arts classes are a fantastic team building activity for your employees that can also help them develop mindfulness, feel more effective at work and tackle stress. It’s possible for your workers to attend a martial arts class in person, or participate in one via Zoom online. It is also possible to hire a martial arts teacher to come to your workplace and supervise a class as an alternative to taking a tai chi, yoga or kickboxing session.

You’ll find there are numerous disciplines of martial arts to contemplate for your employees. Some involve a lot more contact, such as karate and Brazilian jiu jitsu, whilst Boabom is a no-contact, non-competitive form of martial arts. Your personnel may also want to try a tai chi or yoga class as another way to alleviate on-the-job stress.

    Business Meditation Lessons

Help your staff cope with stress and enhance productivity by allowing them to take part in business meditation lessons. You can enroll for a meditation class via Zoom online or in person at the studio, or have a meditation teacher come to your place of work. Learning how to practice meditation can positively affect a staff member’s home life, not just time spent at their job.

    Boston School of Boabom Reviews

“I saw an ad for Boabom (“Bo-ah-bomb”) a few years ago on the T, and I was curious. The ad made it look like yoga, but the website promised something more like martial arts. I went to the free Saturday intro class, and decided to give it a shot.

The instructors of Boabom will tell you that it is “meditation through movement”. To the rest of us, it’s a great form of exercise that will improve your flexibility, balance, coordination, breathing and leave your head clear at the end of class. You can follow the core “Boabom” classes, which focus on strength and speed, or try Seamm Jasani (pronounced See-ahhm Ha-sah-nee), which is much slower. I’ve seen people practice from age 8 into their 70’s.

Boabom isn’t taught like most forms of self defense, in that you don’t spar. You will practice carefully with each other, but there is no hitting, leaving you bruised or hurt. If you’re looking to learn how to fight someone, this isn’t for you. But over time you WILL learn how to defend yourself effectively, getting into shape as you do so.

In every class, you learn something new. Every class. There are so many different movements, that you progressively add new ones, and leave others behind as you have mastered them. This keeps classes interesting, instead of having the same session week after week.

I practiced Boabom for three years before moving to Somerville. As much as I love it, the trek to Brookline is too long to keep up regularly. I would still be there if I lived closer, though.

If you’re looking for a good workout, for something that’s different, I’d give Boabom a try!” Alex

“I have practiced martial arts at the Boston School of Boabom for about 4 years and this has been one of the best decisions I’ve taken. This is a form of soft martial arts, with focus on relaxation, meditation and self defense. The energy at the school from students and teachers is very positive and inspiring. If you are interested in martial arts and have not found a school or a discipline that fits what you’re looking for, come to the free intro class every Saturday at noon to get a taste of what it’s like!” Raul
